The 59th Cannes Film Festival opens

Celn | Myself | 星期一, 5月 15th, 2006

Sidney Poitier officially opened the 59th Cannes Film Festival as the cast of “The Da Vinci Code” led a galaxy of stars bringing glitz and glamour to the French Riviera.“As I stand here in this atmosphere where the genius of so many of the world’s great cinema auteurs still lingers, I am honoured in the extreme and privileged beyond words to welcome the present generation .. who will surely come with a genius of their own,” the 79-year-old actor told the opening ceremony.Earlier “Da Vinci” director Ron Howard and co-stars Tom Hanks and French actress Audrey Tautou — dressed in an off-the-shoulder, white mini dress and high, silver sling-backs — set the cameras whirring as they gathered on the Cannes Croisette.Thousands of people had gathered behind carefully guarded barriers craning for a glimpse of the stars, including the members of the Cannes jury headed this year by Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai.Other celebrities on the red carpet were Italian actress Monica Bellucci, in a shimmering classic long black dress, Britain’s Helena Bonham-Carter and her husband Tim Burton.
Wong addressed the opening of the festival in Chinese saying he was very flattered to be in Cannes, and wishing everyone a “bon festival”.
Earlier arrivals included Samuel L. Jackson, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, in a stunning red dress with a long fan train, Andie MacDowell and directors Gus Van Sant and David Cronenberg.
French actress Juliette Binoche, wearing an apricot dress, arrived arm in arm with Poitier.

Mothers’ Day

Celn | Myself | 星期五, 5月 12th, 2006

Ancient celebrations of motherhood
People in many ancient cultures celebrated holidays honoring motherhood, personified as a goddess. Here are just a few of those:
Ancient Greeks celebrated a holiday in honor of Rhea(Photo), the mother of the gods, including Zeus.
Ancient Romans celebrated a holiday in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess.
In the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddessBrigid(Photo), and later her successor St. Brigid, were honored with a spring Mother’s Day.
Motherhood honoured in modern times
Mothers’ Day is not celebrated on the same day throughout the world, for instance, in America Mother’s Day occurs on the second Sunday in May while in Britain it is honored on the fourth Sunday in Lent(For more information on Lent, please check out Lent in “Easter’s dictionary” or Carnival in ”Word & Story”).
** Mother’s Day in Britain (March 21st, 2006 )
Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Britain beginning in the 17th century.
It began as a day when apprentices and servants could return home for the day to visit their mothers. Traditionally,  men went home with a gift of “mothering cake” — a kind of fruitcake or fruit-filled pastry known as simnel cake (Photo ).
**  Mother’s Day in America (May 14th, 2006)
Thanks to Anna M. Jarvis, Mother’s Day has become an official holiday in the United States.
After a year when her mother died on May 9, 1905, Anna M. Jarvis attended a memorial service at their church. Inspired by the service, she thought it would be wonderful if people set aside a time to pay personal tribute to their mothers. Then, the daughter began using some of her inheritance to promote a day that would honor all mothers.
She and others staged a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother’s Day. They were successful in the end. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
Carnation: the symbol of Mother’s Day

It was Jarvis who originated the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day because carnation was her mother’s favorite flower.
A pink carnation is to honor a living mother and a white carnation is memory of a mother who passed away.

Happiness will come again

Celn | Myself | 星期二, 5月 9th, 2006

Are you aware that everythin in our life always seemingly imitates each other?
The things you encountered today appeared to have happened before, only the trivial details were somewhat different.
Take, the scene of love, for example, your lovers may have been different over the years, whereas there are many things you might also have experienced in the past. Falling in love is no more than the several specified phases. The flirtation between lovebirds is also simply about the several specified steps. Also the quarrel between the two is nothing but for the several specified reasons. The breakup, or failure in love, seems to bear lots of subtle resemblances to the previous one, too.
Things occur between friends, like jealousy, aloofness, is not fresh. Haven’t these sorts of things arisen between you and your friends before? This time, the roles have been exchanged only.
It is not only the people who appear in our lives that we seemingly have known, but also our life. Say you have once hurt the one who was deeply in love with you .And one day you were hurt by the one you were deeply in love with. It was not what we call nemesis, because there was no right or wrong about feelings between man and woman. Nor was there so called circulation. We considered startlingly that all the things before our eyes were out of nemesis, which were merely man’s life. The miscellaneous things in our life will originally imitate each other.
Love is like this, so is long or forever parting.
Happiness is like this, and so is sorrow.
To be a human will sometimes be tedious in that the things happened were too similar. To be a human will sometimes be fun, because we know happiness will come again due to similarity.
(From Chinadaily)
PS:
Deeply moved by the article.
yes, life is ceaselessly imitated each other.
Whatever you did, others will do it again.
Character determines what we do,and shapes our fate too.
We should think over before making a decision!
